I’m deciding between a projector and a large TV for my home theater. After comparing screen size, brightness, viewing distance, cost, and picture quality, the numbers seem close. Which option offers the best overall value and viewing experience?
Don’t choose based on diagonal size alone. A 120-inch projector image sounds like an automatic win, but it only delivers that experience in a room where you can control light, place the projector correctly, and live with lower HDR brightness. A large TV is much less sensitive to the room and will usually have better black levels, contrast, color consistency, and daytime visibility.
For most setups up to roughly 85 to 100 inches, I’d pick the TV for overall value. It turns on quickly, needs little adjustment, handles sports and gaming well, and looks good with the lights on. Projector brightness figures are difficult to compare directly with TV brightness, and the advertised lumen number does not tell you how bright the final image will look after screen size, picture mode, throw distance, and calibration are factored in.
The projector starts making more sense when you genuinely want 110 to 150 inches and have a dedicated dark room. At that point, matching the image size with a TV becomes expensive or impractical. A projector can create a more theater-like image, especially with a wide seating area, but budget for the whole installation: screen, mount, cabling, light control, possible lamp replacement, and an audio system. Projector speakers are rarely a serious solution.
The overlooked number is how often you will actually use it. If the room doubles as a family room and people watch casually throughout the day, the TV’s convenience probably matters more than another 30 inches of image. If movie nights are the main purpose and you are willing to darken the room every time, the projector earns its compromises.
My short version: buy the biggest good TV that fits your budget unless your target size is clearly above 100 inches. Once image size becomes the priority and the room supports it, the projector offers the better experience per inch. Otherwise, the TV is usually the better value per hour of real-world use.
