Roborock Saros 20 Flow — Are The Little Legs Actually Worth Paying For?

I’m replacing my current robot vacuum after it repeatedly got hung up between the kitchen and hallway. I tried moving the thin entry mat and adding a small ramp at the 7/8-inch threshold, but then it started catching on the metal floor vent near my desk.

The Roborock Saros 20 Flow caught my eye because of the little legs, though I’m skeptical about paying extra for a feature that may rarely matter. Do they make a noticeable difference in an ordinary mixed-floor home, or should I try something else next?

If the doorway transition is what regularly stops your current robot, the lifting hardware is more than a gimmick. That threshold is right around the point where many standard robots become unreliable, so the Saros has a real advantage there. You may need to mark the transition in the app before it uses the most aggressive climbing move consistently.

The floor vent is a different problem. The lift system helps with height changes, but it cannot guarantee that a wheel, brush, or low edge won’t catch in a grille. A low-profile vent cover or a small no-go zone may still be necessary.

I’d pay the premium if unattended room-to-room cleaning is the priority and you cannot alter the threshold. If the vent causes most of the trouble, fix or isolate that first. A less expensive robot could then work just as well in your layout.

A solid doorway lip and a loose mat may be the same height, but the robot handles them very differently. The Saros lifting setup can help with the fixed transition, while a mat that slides or bunches may still stop it. Test the doorway with the mat removed before spending extra. You’re paying for fewer rescues, not better vacuuming.

Don’t buy it based on a clean demo where the robot climbs a perfectly square block. Doorways are messier. The approach can be crooked, a wheel may hit first, and the underside or mop hardware can catch even when the drive wheels have enough lift.

The Saros legs make sense if several permanent transitions interrupt every cleaning run. For a single troublesome doorway, I’d spend money on a proper beveled transition strip first, secured across the full width rather than a small ramp the robot can approach from the side. That fixes the obstacle for any future robot too.

@neonbyte is right that the loose mat is a separate problem, but removing it only proves the doorway is the main obstacle. It doesn’t prove the lifting system will cross reliably in both directions. If you still choose the Saros, buy from somewhere with an easy return window and make that doorway the first test, including with a full dustbin and wet mop setup.

The height by itself does not tell you whether the legs will solve this. The shape of the transition matters just as much. A narrow, sharp lip can catch the underside, while a wider beveled rise of similar height may be easy for an ordinary robot. Crossing direction matters too, especially if one side drops off more abruptly.

Before paying extra, isolate the failures with a few boring but useful tests:

  1. Remove the mat and temporarily cover the vent with something rigid and flat.
  2. Send your current robot across the doorway several times from each direction.
  3. Watch what actually stops it: drive-wheel spin, bumper contact, the center of the chassis grounding out, or a brush getting snagged.
  4. Then uncover the vent and test that separately.

If the wheels lose traction or the chassis beaches on the fixed transition, the lifting hardware directly addresses your problem and is probably worth the premium. If a side brush falls into the vent or the mat folds under the robot, those little legs are mostly irrelevant.

I’m not completely sold on modifying the doorway first, either. @snailcrash’s full-width transition strip is mechanically the cleanest fix, but check door clearance before installing one. A thicker reducer can interfere with a door sweep, stop the door from closing cleanly, or create a new edge on the other side. That is especially annoying in a rental or anywhere you cannot screw the strip down.

My practical answer is to buy the climbing model only if the bare doorway is the confirmed failure and you expect the robot to cross it on most runs. Otherwise, spend the money on a flush vent cover and a mat with a grippy backing. The goal is not proving that the robot can perform the climb once. It is removing the exact snag that forces you to rescue it every week.

The hidden cost is that those legs are another dirt-exposed mechanism that can collect hair or grit and need attention. Roborock’s own guidance notes that debris around the climbing arm can prevent it from extending.

I’d be cautious about treating your current robot’s failure as proof the Saros will succeed, since chassis shape and wheel placement differ. For a single troublesome doorway, the premium feels hard to justify unless changing the transition is impossible and that crossing is essential to every run.

If you buy it, inspect and clean the lifting area regularly. Otherwise you may replace a predictable threshold problem with a less obvious mechanical one.

Don’t judge the legs only by whether they can get the robot into the hallway. It has to cross that doorway again when the battery is lower, the bin has dirt in it, and the mop may be wet. That return trip matters more than I first realized.

What confused me about these climbing features was thinking a successful crossing meant the problem was solved. If the dock sits on the kitchen side and the robot gets stuck coming back from the hallway, it may never recharge, empty itself, or finish the rest of its schedule. Even an occasional failure would still defeat the point of paying for unattended cleaning. On the other hand, if you can put the dock where the robot can reach most rooms without crossing the troublesome doorway, the premium starts looking much less necessary.

I’d decide based on how central that doorway is to the cleaning route. If every run requires crossing it twice, the little legs have a real job and could be worth paying for. If that doorway only leads to one small area, I’d rather keep the cheaper robot and carry it over there when needed, or clean that area separately. That is less elegant, but potentially a lot cheaper than buying specialized hardware for a single obstacle.

The vent would still make me hesitate. From a beginner’s perspective, it is easy to lump every “robot got stuck here” problem together, but climbing a solid edge and avoiding an opening in the floor are almost opposite tasks. A robot that lifts itself higher may clear the doorway beautifully and still put a wheel or brush into the vent. I would temporarily cover the vent and run the current robot normally for several days. That gives you a clearer picture than repeatedly sending it straight at the doorway while watching.

So yes, the legs can be worth it, but mostly when that transition controls access to the dock or separates large parts of the home. I wouldn’t pay extra just for the satisfaction of seeing it climb a difficult lip during setup. I’d pay if crossing that lip reliably is what allows the entire cleaning routine to happen without you being there.
