What Actually Works to Keep a Mac Running Fast?

My Mac has gradually slowed down, and I’m seeing conflicting advice about cache cleaners, antivirus apps, storage, and memory. Which Mac performance tips actually work, and which common speed-up methods are myths?

A Mac with a nearly full drive and dozens of background apps can improve noticeably, while a Mac slowed by aging hardware won’t be rescued by a cache cleaner. Keep a healthy chunk of storage free, trim login items, use Activity Monitor to check memory pressure and CPU hogs, and remove apps you no longer need. Cache cleaning usually creates busywork because macOS rebuilds those files, and antivirus won’t make the machine faster. If memory pressure stays high during normal use, fewer browser tabs may help, but the real limit is RAM, which can’t be upgraded on most recent Macs.

Restart the Mac, then test it for a few minutes before opening your usual browser tabs and apps. If it feels normal at first and slows down afterward, the problem is probably a specific app, extension, sync service, or background process rather than macOS itself. Activity Monitor is useful, as @epicpixel8696x said, but watch it for a while. A single CPU spike doesn’t prove much.

The fixes that tend to matter are removing unnecessary browser extensions, disabling unwanted background items, keeping enough free storage for updates and swap space, and updating apps that misbehave. Slowdowns right after a macOS update can be temporary while Spotlight, Photos, or cloud services finish indexing and syncing. If the Mac stays slow even in Safe Mode or a fresh user account, that points more toward the operating system or hardware.

“RAM cleaner” apps are especially pointless because they often force macOS to reload data it had cached for a reason. Routine cache deletion has the same problem. Antivirus may be appropriate for security needs, but it is another background workload, not a speed tool. A clean macOS reinstall can fix years of accumulated software clutter, but it should be a last diagnostic step after backing up, not regular maintenance.

If the Mac is getting hot and throttling, deleting caches and freeing a few gigabytes will do basically nothing. Heat is a real performance problem, especially on older Intel models. Check whether the fans are constantly running, the case is unusually hot, or the slowdown appears during video calls, gaming, exports, or use on a bed or couch. Give the vents room, disconnect questionable docks and peripherals, and have heavy dust buildup or a failing fan dealt with properly. “Cooling” apps that force the fans to maximum are not a repair.

The hardware generation matters too. An old Mac with a mechanical hard drive can feel dramatically faster after moving to an SSD. A newer Mac with soldered storage and memory has no comparable upgrade path. If its normal workload needs more RAM or CPU power than it has, no maintenance utility is going to fix that. You can reduce the workload, but that is a workaround, not an upgrade.

I agree with @openhive7130flow about Safe Mode, with a caveat: Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment, not a performance benchmark. Graphics and other features may behave differently there. Use it to see whether the unexplained CPU activity, crashes, or background processes disappear. Don’t conclude that the hardware is bad merely because animations feel less smooth in Safe Mode.

The methods that actually matter are boring:

  • Keep enough drive space available that macOS is not fighting for room to update, cache, and swap memory.
  • Remove background software you do not use, including menu bar tools, browser extensions, cloud sync clients, old printer utilities, and vendor “helper” apps.
  • Look at Activity Monitor while the slowdown is happening. Sort by CPU, check Memory Pressure, and look for processes reading or writing huge amounts of data.
  • Back up before troubleshooting a Mac that freezes, restarts, produces file errors, or takes an abnormally long time to open ordinary files. That can be a storage or hardware problem, not “clutter.”
  • Run Apple Diagnostics if there are signs of hardware trouble. Disk Utility’s First Aid is useful for filesystem problems, but a clean result does not prove every component is healthy.
  • Compare the Mac with and without external displays, hubs, docks, and accessories. Bad drivers, flaky cables, and cheap hubs can create surprisingly ugly behavior.

The myths are easier. RAM cleaners are junk. Defragmenting an SSD is unnecessary. Repairing permissions is not the universal cure it was treated as many years ago. Regular cache deletion usually makes the next launch slower while everything gets rebuilt. Antivirus should be installed because your security situation calls for it, not because someone claims it will make macOS faster. Running three security scanners at once is a good way to create the problem you were trying to solve.

Be careful with “cleaner” apps that produce a giant list of scary-looking files. A large cache is not automatically wasted space, and high RAM use is not automatically bad. macOS is supposed to use available memory. Memory Pressure and swap activity tell you more than the raw number of gigabytes marked as used.

Finally, define what “slow” means. Slow websites may be DNS, Wi-Fi, extensions, or the site itself. Slow Finder searches may be indexing. Slow startup may be login items or a troublesome peripheral. Beachballs across several basic apps, random restarts, and file corruption are more serious. Treating all of those as the same problem is why cleanup utilities sell so well. Diagnose the actual bottleneck before installing more software.

The upgrade people reach for when their Mac feels slow is often the thing that made it slow. Every new macOS version assumes newer hardware, and a machine that ran fine three OS releases ago can crawl once you push it onto the latest one. If your Mac got noticeably worse right after a major upgrade and stayed that way for weeks, that is not indexing finishing up, that is the OS being heavier than the hardware wants. Nobody warns you about this because there is no clean way back once you upgrade.

@myst1c_server nailed the heat angle, but I’d stretch it one step further on laptops: a worn battery causes throttling too. macOS will quietly cap performance to protect a degraded or swelling battery, and no cache tool touches that. Check the battery health readout. If it says service recommended, that alone can explain sluggishness that looks like a software problem. Same goes for charging off a weak third party adapter, the system throttles rather than draw more than it’s getting.

The part everyone here is circling but not saying plainly: most ‘slow Mac’ complaints are one specific app misbehaving, not the whole system rotting. Browsers are the usual culprit. I’d spend ten minutes in Activity Monitor watching what actually eats CPU while it’s slow before touching anything else. And don’t sleep on the hidden background helpers in System Settings under login items, the ‘allow in background’ list is full of leftover daemons from apps you deleted years ago. Turning those off costs nothing and skips the whole cleaner app circus.

Check Low Power Mode before paying for an app with a broom icon. On MacBooks it can reduce performance, and its setting may differ depending on whether you’re plugged in or running on battery. A weak charger or heavily loaded dock can complicate things too, so test once with the proper charger connected directly and accessories removed.

I’d push back slightly on the idea that every newer macOS release automatically ruins older hardware. It can happen, but “the OS is heavier” is often blamed when the real change was a new browser version, an extension, cloud syncing, or software that added another background helper. Use a repeatable test: time the same app launch, file export, or startup with your normal account, then with browser extensions disabled or a clean user account. “It feels slow” is real, but it is not especially good diagnostic data.

The useful fixes reduce an actual workload: fewer background services, enough free storage, updated or removed buggy software, and fewer absurdly heavy web pages left open all week. The myths mostly claim unused-looking resources are a problem. Free RAM is not a trophy, caches are supposed to exist, and repeatedly deleting both can make the Mac do more work. If ordinary tasks remain slow after a clean restart with no extras running, stop shopping for cleaner utilities and start considering battery service, storage failure, thermal trouble, or hardware that has simply reached its limit.

Open Disk Utility and check actual free space before deleting anything labeled “System Data.” That category is vague, and cleaner apps often treat normal caches, local snapshots, and support files as junk; if space is genuinely tight, remove large files and unused apps instead of poking through hidden folders.

Don’t install a cleaner or change ten settings at once. Restart, reproduce the slowdown, note the top process in Activity Monitor, then disable or remove one suspect app and test again. That simple before-and-after check is more useful than any “optimize” button because it shows whether you fixed an actual bottleneck.
